2nd Grade News
This week we learned about the water cycle. The class worked together to make a diagram of the water cycle for our wall. We also worked on our 2-digit subtraction As the weather starts to get colder, please make sure your child has appropriate clothing to go outside. We go outside for recess every day, unless it is raining, it is below 0, or it is unsafe to be outside. There is no hot lunch on Tuesday. Please make sure that your child has a lunch. Next Week at a Glance Next week we will continue to learning about weather. We will focus on different forms of precipitation and storms. As we read and learn about weather, we will also be looking at sequencing. In Math the class will continue to work on two-digit subtractions. It has been a bit of a challenge for some of the 2nd graders. If your child is struggling, just remind them that to get better they need to practice and keep trying. Making mistakes is just an opportunity to learn. Khan Academy is a great website to help with math. Our class will be reading about Solomon. We will focus on how we love because God first loved us. 2nd Grade News
This week we welcomed a new student into our class. Victor joined our class on Thursday! We learned about the three branches of government and practices two-digit addition. 1st-4th grade is singing on Sunday. 2nd grade is singing at the 8:00 A.M. service. Students need to be in the 2nd grade classroom by 7:45 A.M. If you cannot make it to that service you are welcome to bring your child to the 10:30 A.M. service. A number of 2nd grade students either do not have headphones, or their headphones don’t work. Please make sure your child has working headphones at school. We use them daily for different activities. I do have two extra headphones, but I have them here only for emergencies. Did you know that babysitting is available the evening of All Saints’ Fest on November 2nd? It’s only $15 per child and available at school from 5:15 to 11 P.M.. Remember you can purchase tickets for this evening beginning Sept. 15 at $40 per person. The ticket includes a fine meal, fellowship, and the chance to bid on some great items. Watch for committee members selling tickets before school and on Sunday mornings. Or you can pick up a form, fill it out, and turn it into the school office with your payment. Donations for auction are accepted at any time. Incidentally, the first 100 people purchasing tickets will get a coupon for a free glass of wine the night of the event.. Also ask any ASF committee member about the Disney tickets incentive! If you child struggles with their basic facts, you may want to get some flashcards and have them practice. Our class will be reading about the battle of Gideon and Ruth. In Math the class will finish looking at place value and start on two-digit addition. This can be a bit tricky for some students. If your child struggles with this encourage them to stay positive and keep trying. Our class will be reading about the battle of Jericho and Gideon. We will focus on God being on our side. This week we read a couple of books about plants. The students really enjoyed looking at the diagrams in our books, and are looking forward to having some hands on exploration of plants next week. This is a friendly reminder to all family members of students to leave the two marked parking spaces for All Saints' Fest Parking open. Each year during our annual auction, these two spots are highly sought after and paid for through bidding that ultimately benefits all of the children in our school. If you are interested in one of these annual parking spaces, please plan to attend our auction to bid on this benefit! In the meantime, please be allow those who won this privilege to take full advantage of it. Mark your calendars. November 2nd is the date for the 25th All Saint’ Fest. The All Saints’ Fest is the largest annual fundraiser for Our Shepherd Lutheran School. It is an evening for adults to be held at the Grand Hall on High School Road. There will be fine food, fellowship, and silent and live auctions. Tickets go on sale the weekend of Sept. 15th and 16th. You can also get involved by donating new items for the auction that evening. Collection box and donation forms are across from the coat racks. Proceeds this year will be used for the STEAM trail and robotics programs as well as tuition assistance. This week we finished our Social Studies unit, looking at community jobs. We read Officer Buckle and Gloria and examined the character in the story as well as characters in other stories.
