2nd Grade News
This week we started our Government unit. We learned about leaders, and how we elect leaders. We also started two-digit addition. Everyone understood the concept of regroup when we have too many ones. Let’s see if they remember on Monday. A number of 2nd grade students either do not have headphones, or their headphones don’t work. Please make sure your child has working headphones at school. We use them daily for different activities. Did you know that babysitting is available the evening of All Saints’ Fest on November 2nd? It’s only $15 per child and available at school from 5:15 to 11 P.M.. Remember you can purchase tickets for this evening beginning Sept. 15 at $40 per person. The ticket includes a fine meal, fellowship, and the chance to bid on some great items. Watch for committee members selling tickets before school and on Sunday mornings. Or you can pick up a form, fill it out, and turn it into the school office with your payment. Donations for auction are accepted at any time. Incidentally, the first 100 people purchasing tickets will get a coupon for a free glass of wine the night of the event.. Our focus will be the three branches of government. As we are reading about our Government, we will also be working on drawing conclusions and making predictions. In Math the class will practice two-digit addition. Knowing basic facts really helps a child out with multiple-digit addition and subtraction. If you child struggles with their basic facts, you may want to get some flashcards and have them practice. Our class will be reading about the battle of Gideon and Ruth. We will focus on God being on our side. 2nd Grade News
The students showed what they learned about plants this week by making models of a plant and explaining the different parts. The class also started to look at three-digit numbers and place value. Midterm is today. I will email the progress reports on Sunday. Don’t forget to have your child return their reading log on Monday. Students are expected to read 15 minutes each day. We will be reading and learning about our Government. As we are reading about our Government, we will also be working on drawing conclusions and making predictions. In Math the class will finish looking at place value and start on two-digit addition. This can be a bit tricky for some students. If your child struggles with this encourage them to stay positive and keep trying. Our class will be reading about the battle of Jericho and Gideon. We will focus on God being on our side. This week we read a couple of books about plants. The students really enjoyed looking at the diagrams in our books, and are looking forward to having some hands on exploration of plants next week. This is a friendly reminder to all family members of students to leave the two marked parking spaces for All Saints' Fest Parking open. Each year during our annual auction, these two spots are highly sought after and paid for through bidding that ultimately benefits all of the children in our school. If you are interested in one of these annual parking spaces, please plan to attend our auction to bid on this benefit! In the meantime, please be allow those who won this privilege to take full advantage of it. Mark your calendars. November 2nd is the date for the 25th All Saint’ Fest. The All Saints’ Fest is the largest annual fundraiser for Our Shepherd Lutheran School. It is an evening for adults to be held at the Grand Hall on High School Road. There will be fine food, fellowship, and silent and live auctions. Tickets go on sale the weekend of Sept. 15th and 16th. You can also get involved by donating new items for the auction that evening. Collection box and donation forms are across from the coat racks. Proceeds this year will be used for the STEAM trail and robotics programs as well as tuition assistance. Next Week at a Glance The class will continue to learn about plants. If you would like to donate any plants, flowers, fruits, or vegetables, we could use them to examine and explore. In Math the class will be exploring numbers. We will look at arrays and breaking numbers apart into equal groups (the foundation of multiplication and division). Our class will be reading about the Ten Commandments and the golden calf. We will also talk about God’s forgiveness. On Tuesday Next week, DCE Joel will be coming to our class and showing the 2nd graders how to use their new bibles. Please have your child bring in their bible on Tuesday.
